~ 9:39 PM ~
i went to work feeling good and looking forward to my big day in a few days' time. but work ain't kind to me... i ended up with a splitting headache at the end of the day and a neglected hubby-to-be (jus when i felt i ought to be there to support him). then theres the regret that comes with checking the internet email after reaching home (since i didnt hv a chance to check in the office).... it turns out that theres another storm of enormous proportions brewing, jus waiting to erupt in a few days (yep, right before my big day)
what a day. but.. its all in a day's work........
in such times, i can really feel that i've grown over the yrs....... sure its a lot of pressure, but nothing really fazes me nowadays. i can now deal well with fog (aka ambiguity), suprises (aka shock), heavy workload (by prioritisation aka 'managing bosses'), external pressures (by asserting) and work-life balance (by knowing whats most important to one and making choices one wont regret later in life). sometimes it is helping others deal with the ambiguity and shock thats more of a challenge (aka leadership). we live in a world of incomplete information, seeking certainty can be too idealistic...hence succeeding in this world hinges upon asking the right questions to harness the tension that comes from not knowing [enough].
for example, if something fails.. one could either ask "what went wrong/who is responsible?" or, one could ask "how could we have done it better?/what would the design of a fail-proof system look like?". consequently, the first question aims to blame while the latter seeks the solution. in asking the right questions, we frame the thinking processes to engineer for success. but i would concede that such questioning techniques not only requires practice, more importantly, it also requires a mental shift in frame of mind......... all too often we fail to see possibilities and opportunities in crises. this is something i really want to remind myself on.
if one asks the right questions, the answer becomes blindingly obvious. that must be a skill i need to continuously hone
